Using e-cigarettes, or “vaping,” are terms used synonymously to refer to the use of a wide variety of electronic, battery-operated devices that aerosolize, but do not burn, liquids to release nicotine and other substances. In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco. There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment). Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.

It can often lead to debilitating symptoms and frequent hospitalizations as people age. Electronic nicotine products, which include e-cigarettes, vape pens, hookah pens, personal vaporizers and mods, e-cigars, e-pipes and e-hookahs, deliver nicotine in aerosol form without combustion. Since they were first introduced in the U.S. in the late 2000s, electronic nicotine products have often been portrayed as a safer alternative to smoking, but a growing body of research has led to increased concern about potential negative health effects. Some individuals who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. Since smoking kills fully half of all long-time users, successfully stopping smoking leads to well-documented health benefits.

Meanwhile, some influential conservatives are calling for the Trump administration to hold back on its plans to ban flavored tobacco. They argue such a move would hurt small vape business owners and people trying to quit smoking. Many governments impose restrictions on smoking tobacco, especially in public areas. The primary justification has been the negative health effects of second-hand smoke.[124] Laws vary by country and locality. Nearly all countries have laws restricting places where people can smoke in public, and over 40 countries have comprehensive smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in virtually all public venues. During World War I and World War II, cigarettes were rationed to soldiers.

This data brief demonstrates that teens whose environments put them at risk for use of e-cigarettes are more likely to try them. The study, published on May 23, 2022, in Tobacco Control, is the first to look at the health care costs of e-cigarette use among adults 18 and older. The second most supported measure, strengthening restrictions on the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes, was supported by 82% of people. In 2019, only 67% of people in Australia supported strengthening these restrictions. The proportion of people neither smoking regular cigarettes nor using e‑cigarettes has remained stable (Figure 3).

Beginning August 1, 2019, Minnesota law prohibits the use of these products indoors where cigarette use is prohibited, including bars and restaurants. A 2021 study found that daily e-cigarette usage among tobacco smokers can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking eightfold. Researchers assessed data from the 2014–2019 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, focusing on smokers who were not planning to quit smoking at the start of the period. However, a 2019 study into the long-term health effects of vaping found that people using e-cigarettes had a higher risk of respiratory disease than people who never smoked. The authors first created a comprehensive database of tobacco product flavor prohibition and restriction laws across the United States, including both state and local statutes. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes.

Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores. The long-term health effects of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are not fully understood, but the science indicates they are not a safe alternative to smoking. Most are noncombustible which includes a battery, a heating element, and a liquid compartment, usually containing addictive nicotine, that is added to the e-liquid or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other contents.

To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. Manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes aggressively target young people.

Advertisements for vapes are also restricted in youth-centered areas like parks. Meanwhile, California was the least popular state for youth vaping, as just six percent of teens had picked up the habit. Louisiana and Montana tied to round out the top five, both with a quarter of teens using e-cigarettes.

In contrast, other studies found acute microvascular endothelial dysfunction, increased oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in smokers after exposure to e-cigarettes with nicotine, but not after e-cigarettes without nicotine (reviewed in [20]). In women smokers, a study found a significant difference in stiffness after smoking just one tobacco cigarette, but not after use of e-cigarettes (reviewed in [20]). However, research updates on, and analysis of, the potential health benefits/risks of e-cigarettes are outside the scope of TobaccoTactics. These devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as pictured below, with several different names. Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, but many resemble pens or USB flash drives, and are not recognized as tobacco products. Larger e-cigarettes such as tank systems, or “mods,” do not resemble other tobacco products.

Cessation strategies should be based on the best available evidence of efficacy, to go with other tobacco control measures and subject to monitoring and evaluation. Based on the current evidence, it is not recommended that governments permit sale of e-cigarettes as consumer products in pursuit of a cessation objective. While they may help some people stop smoking, vaping products do not have FDA approval as a tool for quitting. E-cigarettes may even keep people from trying proven methods of quitting smoking.

To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.

It would seem that future studies should analyse the possible toxic effects of humectants and related products at concentrations similar to those that e-cigarette vapers are exposed to reach conclusive results. Vape aerosols are not just harmless water vapors that are inhaled and exhaled (as marketed). Vape aerosol exposure is unsafe and contains chemicals, metals (i.e., lead, nickel), and other particles that can interfere with lung development and health.

They may resemble traditional tobacco products like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or other common gadgets like pens, flashlights, USB flash drives, fidget spinners, gaming controls, car key fobs, smart watches and even asthma inhalers. Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings to several companies for marketing 15 different e-cigarette products packaged to look like toys, food or cartoon characters that were likely to promote use among adolescents.
