Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. If gynecomastia makes you self-conscious or you have other health concerns, talk to your healthcare provider. If any abnormalities are noticed, seeking medical advice promptly allows for timely intervention and management. To help prevent this hormonal imbalance, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential.
During puberty, hormonal fluctuations can lead to temporary breast enlargement because of breast tissue. Stage 1 gynecomastia is the initial phase of breast development, where there is a small enlargement of breast tissue with minimal swelling. The definition of gynecomastia is the presence of breast tissue greater than 0.5 cm in diameter in a male. See your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms that may be signs of breast cancer in males.
It also binds to the androgen receptor, blocking the binding of T and DHT, or displacing them from their receptors. Type 2 causes include gonadotropins, clomiphene and enhanced endogenous estrogen, type 3 include metronidazole, cimetidine, flutamide, cyproterone acetate and bicalutamide. The role of PRL, progesterone and other growth factors (GFs) such as insulin like growth factor I (IGF-I) and epidermal growth factor (EGF), in the development of gynecomastia are unclear.
In some cases, there can be a temporary increase in estrogen relative to testosterone, leading to the development of breast tissue. Gynecomastia is a condition that results from an imbalance of hormones in men, specifically an increase in estrogen levels relative to testosterone. Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in men, leading to the appearance of breasts. It’s important to distinguish between gynecomastia, in which the breast gland tissue is benign (non-cancerous), and breast cancer, which requires medical intervention.
Eventually helpful in cases where gynecomastia caused by high estrogen levels. Male breast reduction procedure reduces excess breast tissue in men, providing a more sculpted chest. It can cause chronic tenderness or pain in the breast tissue.
Although prolactin (PRL) receptors are present in male breast tissue, hyperprolactinemia may lead to gynecomastia through effects on the hypothalamus, causing central hypogonadism.2,10,11 Activation of PRL also leads to decreased androgen and increased estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast cancer cells. E2 levels rise more rapidly than T during early puberty, which leads to an elevated estrogen/androgen ratio.4,7 In most pre-adolescent males, breast enlargement regresses concomitant with pubertal progression and the rise in T levels and so only small numbers of patients have persistent gynecomastia, and the condition usually spontaneously regresses within two years of onset. However, both conditions involve changes in breast tissue, and having gynecomastia does not increase a man’s risk of developing breast cancer. It is the benign enlargement of male or female breast tissue together, which occurs due to hormonal imbalances or other medical conditions. This review covers the causes, evaluation, and treatment of gynaecomastia and the risk factors for and evaluation and treatment of breast cancer in males. Ashkenazi Jews have a higher prevalence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 and an increased risk of male breast cancer than the general population.13 Male carriers of BRCA2 have a cumulative risk for breast cancer of 7% by age 80.
The rate of breast cancer in Japanese men exposed to nuclear fallout was threefold greater than in non-exposed men.14 Population based US tumour registries show that rates are highest in African-American men, intermediate in non-Hispanic Caucasian men and Asian-Pacific Islanders, and lowest in Hispanic men.10 Male breast cancer can occur at any age but mean age is 65 years. Male breast cancer represents about 1% of all cases of breast cancer, but in sub-Saharan Africa 7-14% of breast cancer cases occur in men. Lung and hepatic tumours can produce enough systemic human chorionic gonadotrophin to increase Leydig cell testosterone secretion, which is readily converted to oestrogen through increased aromatase activity.
They block the effects of estrogen on breast tissue which can reverse the growth. Drugs like tamoxifen shrink breast tissue in men with gynecomastia. Exercise and weight management are important for overall health but in the case of true gynecomastia the breast tissue won’t decrease much with weight loss alone. This procedure involves the surgical removal of the glandular breast tissue that causes gynecomastia.
